Fibromyalgia Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) is a debilitating disorder characterized by chronic pain, stiffness and tenderness of muscles and tendons without any detectable inflammation. Sleep disorders and fatigue are often present along with the chronic pain. People with Fibromyalgia may also experience other symptoms such as increased headaches or facial pain, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, anxiety and cognitive symptoms (troubles with concentration, short-term memory and handling multiple tasks). According to the American College of Rheumatology, FMS affects three million to six million Americans. As many as 80 percent of individuals diagnosed with FMS are women, however, children, post-menopausal women, the elderly and men also can be affected. FMS can be disabling and life altering.
In 1990, 18 tender points were defined by the American College of Rheumatology for the diagnosis of FMS. The patient must test positive for tender points for at least three months. Pain should be on both the left and right side of the body, and both above and below the waist. Cervical spine, anterior chest, thoracic spine or low back pain must also be present. Dr. Bowersox’ three main criteria for diagnosis of FMS are fatigue/exhaustion, sleep disturbance (non-refreshing sleep) and pain. The level of pain can span from general aches that are uncomfortable to pain that is so severe that the FMS patient does not want to be touched. Even if fewer than 11 of the 18 tender points are present and the patient shows other symptoms associated with FMS/CFS, Dr. Bowersox has successfully treated such patients with his protocol.
